How Pregnancy Can Affect Your Oral Health

Posted .

Did you know that there are several changes you should expect when you get pregnant? For example, you may know that you’re exercising and eating habits might also change. Still, did you know that the way you care for your oral health should also change?

In fact, you may know that you shouldn’t visit a dental office during your pregnancy. Sadly, this isn’t completely true. In fact, it’s really important for you to remember that you should visit our dentist when you first learn that you’re pregnant. While you shouldn’t have any X-rays done while you’re pregnant, we can do things like cleaning your teeth and gums. In fact, you may find that you need more frequent cleanings.

During your pregnancy, you’ll actually be much more susceptible to gum disease since your body’s hormones may change. Typically, pregnant women have higher levels of progesterone, which could inflame the blood vessels in your gums. Sadly, this could cause gum disease.

Finally, please understand that following a balanced diet is vital for pregnant women. If you don’t follow a well-balanced diet, you might not get the vitamins or calcium your body needs. If you don’t get enough calcium, your little one’s teeth might not develop like they should.
